Kozhikode --A Great Province of Malabar
Overlooking the southwest coast of India lies Kozhikode or Calicut, the erstwhile money in the illustrious Zamorins. Described as "the great province of Malabar" by the legendary traveler Marco Polo, Kozhikode is situated on the northern component of Kerala.
While the district is flanked by Kannur to the north, Malappuram around the south and Wayanad around the east, the frolicking waves in the Arabian Sea lap the western shores of Kerala.
Innumerable versions of how Kozhikode acquired its identify abound amongst the regional populace. Based on one such version, the location acquired its title from "Cock Fort" (the land where the cock crows). Another edition says that Kozhikode derived its title from Koyil Kotu or Kotta, which means a fortified palace.
