Alappuzha Travel

Location : 160km north-west of Thiruvananthapuram, 60kmsouth of Cochin
Population : 264,900

Alappuzha Travel - A golden streak of land woven with rivers, lakes, lagoons and canals. The Alappuzha or Alleppy is labeled since the Venice in the East. Alappuzha, meaning the land between the sea along with a network of rivers falling into it, evokes a sense of romance and elegance. Hemmed in by Kottayam and Pathanamthitta within the east, Ernakulam within the north and Kollam around the south, the district opens out onto the vast expanse in the Lakshadweep Sea to the west. Devoid of mountains and hills, rivers just like the Manimala, Pamba and Achenkovil reign supreme in Alappuzha. Although the Vembanad Lake covers the location from Alappuzha to Kochi, the Kayamkulum Lake flows through Kollam and Alappuzha.

Major Tourist Attraction of Alappuzha Kerala
Alappuzha's remarkable backwaters constitute its hallmark. The locale for those renowned snake boat races is its criss-crossing waterways. Visitors along with the community population look forward to your event.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Punnamada Kayal, the Payippad, the Thiruvanavandoor, Neerettupuram, Karuvatta and Thaikkoottam boat races are held around the time of Onam (see Festivals of India) in several regions in the district, well promoted through the tourism division of Kerala. Amongst them, the one which has caught the fancy from the tourist could be the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. Known as Chundan Vallam (battleships with the Malayali kings), the 130ft lengthy snake boats having 100 rowers, four helmsmen and 25 cheerleaders, are decorated with multicolored silk umbrellas, and race previous leaving thousands of spectators spellbound. Its long shoreline has secured it the status of an important centre for fishing and marine products. The district creates coir and copra and features a flourishing carpet business also.

History about  of Alappuzha
Alappuzha has long been the concentrate of trade and commerce from time immemorial. As early as the 1st century a.d., Christianity had acquired a foothold within this district when St. Thomas, one on the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, landed at Maliankara, current day Cranganore.

It was under the dominion from the second Chera Empire (9th-12th century) that the district flourished in the field of religion and culture. 16th century onwards, foreign powers such as the Portuguese, the Dutch and also the English started gaining an upper hand. For a while, Maharaja Marthanda Varma, the maker of modern day Travancore annexed certain territories from the district. Contemporary day Alappuzha was born on 1st August, 1957.
